Semar Pegulingan, popularized by musicologist Colin McPhee, can be traduced as the "Gamelan Of Love", is a 7 tone ensemble commonly used in the Balinese Gamelan music Tradition.

The 7 tones are displayed as the following:

DING
DONG
DENG
DEUNG
DUNG
DANG
DAING

Some instruments will have a 7 keys display while others will have 14 (2 octaves).

Usually instruments will be presented as 2 pairs of the same type.

Including the prefix "OMBAK" in the samples it means that both pair of instruments are played TOGETHER (Ombak meaning "Wave", it creates the desired effect of waving/chorus in between the ensemble). Usually one ensemble has 2 instruments of the same kind: for example 2 Genders, one "male" and one "female", with a slight detuning in between them, so when they are played together, the same note they will create the unique vibration of the Gamelan tradition.

When the instruments are named without the word "OMBAK" it means that a only a single instrument is played (just one of the pair).

This samples were recorded in the month of July 2021 at the Semar Pegulingan ensemble of the University ISI Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia by the student Agustín Oscar Rissotti.

Extra samples from Narwastu Ensemble in Batubulan were added. The Kendang samples are played by I Nyoman Darsane.

The Gamelan Semar Pegulingan is considered a "progressive" one due to the versatility that the 7 notes gives. Usually melodic composers persue this ensemble for their creations.

Semer is the name of the Hindu God of Love and Pegulingan means to "lay down". The oringins of this ensemble dates from the 17th century and is the chosen ensemble for many traditional dance creations such as Legong.
