Gamelan Selonding is a Traditional Sacred Music Ensemble in Bali, usually played to perform in Ceremonies like Weddings, Births and Cremations. Its sound may remind a dreamy, spiritual, illusion state.

Its scale is named "Pelog Tujuh" (Tujuh means "Seven"), belonging to it a 7 note sequence named by the Balinese as the following:

1. DING
2. DONG
3. DENG
4. DEUNG
5. DUNG
6. DANG
7. DAING

Usually the instruments have 8 keys, so in the Ugal and Pemades the DING note is repeated in a higher octave.

Particularly, in the JEGOG and JUBLAG, not all the notes of the scale are present. In the Jublag, the notes Ding and Dang are missing, while in the Jegog, the note Deung is missing.

On the other hand, the notes Dung and Deung are repeated in the Jublag, while the notes Ding and Daing are repeated in the Jegog.

The nomenclature "OMBAK" in the samples means that 2 keys of the same notes are played together (for example the 2 Ding notes in the PEMADE).

Ombak means "Wave" in Indonesian Language, and to their natives, this small detuning effect in between the notes is what creates the "vibes". This effect is made on purpose tuning sibling instruments a little different.

The group of instruments consists of the following:

1 UGAL
2 PEMADES
2 JUBLAG
2 JEGOGS

For a better and easier understanding of the scales, I named each sample with its note name.

Usually UGAL is the instrument carrying the melodies, the Pemades make fast rhythmic patterns (called "Kotekan"), while the Jublags follow the lower notes of the melody, and the Jegogs carry the bass, deeper low notes.

As a gift, I added small simple samples of rhythmic session (Kendang -drums- and CengCeng -cymbals), which are not usually used in Selonding, but they may be helpful for your creative instincts, as well as some small Suling (Balinese Flute) samples.

Kendang Samples played by I Nyoman Darsane, in Sangar Narwastu, Batubulan, Gianyar.

This samples were recorded from a Balinese Gamelan Selonding Ensemble produced around the year 1980 in the Village of Batubulan, Sukawati, district Gianyar.

It belongs to Pak I Wayan Sweca, professor at the University ISI Denpasar in Bali, who kindly gave me access to his property to record each of the ensemble instruments.
