about

Gamelan Rindik is a bamboo ensemble famoulsy played in the island of Bali. It's one of the most modern ensembles nowadays, and it's commonly played during social dance performances (Jogged Dance) and during breaks for the ricefield workers.

It's sounds are displayed in a 5 tones Slendro scale, showed as the following:

DING
DONG
DENG
DUNG
DANG

Some instruments will have an 11 keys display while others will have 13 keys display (this differs according to the area, some villages prefer to build larger instruments)

In this Gamelan sample pack you will find the following instruments of a typical Balinese Rindik Orchestra:

RINDIK
CENG CENG
GONG PULUH
SULING
KENDANG
KEMPLI

Percussion and Melodic samples were added of the following instruments, to enhance creativeness and experimental compositions:

SULING KAJAK (FLUTE)
KETUG BUMI (BIG BALINESE DRUMS)
VIOLIN
TROMPONG
GONG CHINA
GONG KEBYAR GONG
KEMPUR
KEMONG
TINGKLIK

Samples from the Gamelan Tingklik (A smaller version of Bamboo instruments), are also included as they have a similar vibration. The tingklik ensemble is not as popular as Rindik, but can be found in houses for enjoyment of the sound.

Arriving in Bali, the Majapahit people had difficulty assembling Gamelan including the bamboo instruments of "Angklung". In Bali, Angkung changed its name to "Rindik" which comes from the Javanese ancient language, which means "neatly arranged with few gaps".

The Rindik instruments are usually played by 2-8 players, where 2/4 people beat Rindik and the rest of them play the flute (Suling), Kendang (Drums), Kempli (Beat) and Gong Puluh (Bronze Keys Gong).

Including the prefix "OMBAK" in the samples it means that both pair of instruments are played TOGETHER (Ombak meaning "Wave", it creates the desired effect of waving/chorus in between the ensemble).

released July 23, 2022

This samples were recorded in the month of July 2021 at the Rindik and Tingklik ensembles of the University ISI Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia by the student Agustín Oscar Rissotti.

Along with the times, Rindik is now more flexible in its use. Some of them are complementary to weddings/receptions and can also be used to welcome guests, and contemporary compositions, alone, or mixed with other Gamelan Ensembles.

Extra percussion samples from Narwastu Ensemble in Batubulan were added.

Eternal thanks to I Wayan Sweca and Kadek Astawa for letting me enter the University and Jonathan Bailey for lending me the pangguls and open his Sanggar for my experimentation.
