about

Gamelan Jegog is the biggest Gamelan Bamboo ensemble that can be found in the island of Bali. It's characteristic from the district of Jembrana (North West of the Island), where it was created in the year 1912.

Different from the Rindik (the most usual Bamboo Ensemble in Bali), Gamelan Jegog can be identified for it's huge dimensions. It may take 2 persons to play 1 of the big instruments (which are also named "Jegog"), and in a show, you may see the players actually standing up onto the Gamelan while playing it.

It can take up to 20 musicians to play the whole ensemble, and the musical compositions length may vary: from short ones up to 10 minutes long.

The lower tone keys can reach up to 3 meters long, and sound in a frequency of around 60Hz.

The sound of the scale is fun and playful, and it reminds a 7th dominant chord in Western Music.

The 4 tones are displayed as the following:

1. DING
2. DONG
3. DENG
4. DUNG

Some instruments will have a 4 keys display while others will have 8 (2 octaves).

In this sample pack you will find the following instruments of the Gamelan Jegog Orchestra:

JEGOG x2
UNDIR x2
KUNTUNG x3
KANTIL x3
GANGSA (or "Barangan") x3

Jegog is the lower in frequency, -Undir & Kuntung- the middle ones, -Gangsa and Kantil- the higher ones-.

Usually instruments will be presented as 2 pairs, or a threesome of the same type.

Percussion and Melodic samples were added of the following instruments:

GONG
CENGCENG (cymbals)
FLUTE (Suling)
KEMPUR
KETUG BUMI
KEMONG
KEMPLI
KENDANG
VIOLIN

This samples were recorded in the month of October 2021 at the Jegog ensemble of the University ISI Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia by the student Agustín Oscar Rissotti.

Extra samples from Narwastu Ensemble in Batubulan were added (Kempli, Kemong).

Eternal thanks to I Wayan Sweca for letting me enter the University and lending me the pangguls for my experimentation.

This is one of my favourite ensembles, and I wish you can enjoy it as much as I do!

Please support buying and downloading. All earnings made from this samples are destinated to foment and continue the tradition of Balinese Arts.

Thank you
