Gamelan Banyuwangi, popularized by the traditional social dance "Gandrug", is a 5 tone ensemble commonly used in the East Javanese, Balinese and Lombok Gamelan music Tradition.
The 5 tones are displayed as the following:
DING
DONG
DENG
DUNG
DANG
Instruments will have a 10 keys display.
In this sample pack you will find the following instruments of the Gamelan Banyuwangi Orchestra:
DEMUG JANGER (2)
PEKIN JANGER (2)
SARON JANGER (4)
Instruments will be presented as 2 pairs of the same type.
Including the prefix "OMBAK" in the samples it means that both pair of instruments are played TOGETHER (Ombak meaning "Wave", it creates the desired effect of waving/chorus in between the ensemble). Usually one ensemble has 2 instruments of the same kind: for example 2 Demung, one "male" and one "female", with a slight detuning in between them, so when they are played together, the same note they will create the unique vibration of the Gamelan tradition.
Percussion and Melodic samples were added of the following instruments:
GONG
VIOLIN
KLUNCING (Triangle)
FLUTE (Suling)
KEMPUR
KETUG BUMI
KEMONG
KEMPLI
KENDANG
When the instruments are named without the word "OMBAK" it means that a only a single instrument is played (just one of the pair).
This form of gamelan is very distinctive because although it is actually still part of Javanese culture, it shows a lot of Balinese influence, which is located only a few kilometers across the sea.
In accompanying the Gandrung dance, there are usually additional instruments, namely violins and flutes. The culture of the Banyuwangi people is colored by Javanese, Balinese, Madurese, Malay, European and local cultures that complement each other.
This is assumed to be an "earthly" ensemble, connected to the earth element, that's why I added Gamelan Gambuh Kendang samples and some very special Gamelan Ketug Bumi (big drum ensemble) from Bali.
released September 4, 2021
This samples were recorded in the month of August 2021 at the Gamelan Banyuwangi ensemble of the University ISI Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia by the student Agustín Oscar Rissotti.
Extra samples from Narwastu Ensemble in Batubulan were added.
Eternal thanks to I Wayan Sweca for letting me enter the University for my experimentation.
Please support buying and downloading. All earnings made from this samples are destinated to foment and continue the tradition of Balinese Arts.
