about

Gamelan Angklung is a typical Balinese gamelan which is often used in processions/cremation ceremonies. The strains of the sounds from this gamelan may invite nostalgia, tradition and melancholy.

The 4 tones in a Slendro scale are displayed as the following:

DING
DONG
DENG
DUNG

Some instruments will have a 4 keys display while others will have 8 (2 octaves) or 10 (Reyong).

In this sample pack you will find the following instruments of the Balinese Angklung Orchestra:

JEGOG
KANTIL
PEMADE
REYONG

Usually instruments will be presented as 2 or 4 pairs of the same type.

Including the prefix "OMBAK" in the samples it means that both pair of instruments are played TOGETHER (Ombak meaning "Wave", it creates the desired effect of waving/chorus in between the ensemble). Usually one ensemble has 2 instruments of the same kind: for example 2 Pemades, one "male" and one "female", with a slight detuning in between them, so when they are played together, the same note they will create the unique vibration of the Gamelan tradition.

Percussion and Melodic samples were added of the following instruments:

GONGS
CENGCENG (cymbals)
FLUTES (Suling)
KEMPUR
KEMONG
KEMPLI
KENDANG
KETUG BUMI (Drum Ensemble)

When the instruments are named without the word "OMBAK" it means that a only a single instrument is played (just one of the pair).

This samples were recorded in the month of August 2021 at the Angklung Selatan ensemble of the University ISI Denpasar, Bali, Indonesia by the student Agustín Oscar Rissotti.

The ensemble is named "Angklung Selatan", because this melodic scale tone combination is typical from the south part of the Island. The instruments are usually small, that's why they are relatively easy to carry on while walking on processions.

Extra samples from Narwastu Ensemble in Batubulan were added. The Kendang samples are played by I Nyoman Darsane.

Eternal thanks to I Wayan Sweca and Kadek Astawa for letting me enter the University and Jonathan Bailey for lending me the pangguls and open his Sanggar for my experimentation.

The Gamelan Angklung Selatan is considered a "melancholic" one due to the use of the ensemble in funerals and local cremations. It's usually performed by neighbours and village groups who gather every time one of their family members pass away.
